THE annual Kottiyoor temple festival, which concluded on Friday, recorded an unprecedented footfall of nearly 30 lakh devotees, with a large influx from outside Kerala, particularly Karnataka. This year marked a significant shift in the demographic attending the festival, which is traditionally dominated by devotees from the northern regions of Kerala.

An unexpected highlight of the festival was the visit of Kannada film superstar Darshan, whose presence during the festival season turned Kottiyoor into a widely discussed pilgrimage destination in Karnataka. Following extensive coverage by Kannada news channels, thousands of devotees from the neighboring state arrived at the sacred site, surpassing the number of local devotees for the first time in the festival's history.
