BUS OWNERS on the Kannur-Thottada-Thalassery route have launched an indefinite strike and sit-in protest, alleging that the closure of the entrance to NH 66 and diversion of vehicles have crippled their operations. They say the re-routing forces private buses to cover an additional 7 km to reach Thalassery, pushing up fuel costs and running expenses and making it impossible to balance income and expenditure. Nearly 60 private buses normally run on this stretch every 2 to 5 minutes, catering to thousands of daily commuters, including around 15,000 students.
