Advocates Slam Razing Iconic Court Building

There is a proposal to demolish this 113-year-old building to raise an administrative block

MEMBERS of the Belagavi Bar Association have opposed a proposal to demolish the 113-year-old First Additional District Judge's Court building here. In a memorandum addressed to the Principal District and Sessions Judge on Wednesday, the members demanded that the heritage structure, which is a symbol of the city's rich legal legacy, be renovated and preserved.

They expressed concern over the plan to raze the century-old court building to build an administrative block behind the Principal District Judge's Court premises.

The building was constructed in 1912 during British rule and has been a cornerstone of the Belagavi legal system since then. The members pointed out that the building inside the court compound is architecturally and culturally significant.

"Belagavi was a divisional headquarters under British administration. Such heritage buildings add to the city's historical prominence. Demolishing this iconic court building would be a loss to the legal fraternity and to society," advocate Rajeshwari SL said.
