Students, residents and social activists of Gangavathi in Koppal district have started a campaign of writing letters to the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister demanding that Gangavathi be made a separate district and be given the name 'Kishkindha'.

The word Kishkindha is said to be mentioned in the Ramayana and the place is believed to have been ruled by Sugreeva. Also, Lord Rama and his brother Lakshman met Hanuman in this region which is located near Hampi and Anjanadri Hill in Gangavathi taluk.
