Road freight traffic hits record high in H1 FY26

INDIA'S road freight activity surged in the first half of Financial Year (FY) 2025-26, which amounts to one of the sharpest expansions in recent years, and pointed to a broader revival in trade and industrial distribution.
Data compiled by the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) in its report "Road Freight Traffic Accelerates" shows that Goods and Services Tax (GST) e-way bills touched a record 754.4 million between April and September, up 21.8% year-on-year.
The momentum was particularly strong in September, which registered 132.1 mn eway bills. This is the highest monthly total since the system's inception. The increase was visible across most states, indicating broad-based demand recovery rather than regional concentration. Parallel indicators point to heightened road activity. FASTag transactions under the National Electronic Toll Collection system rose to 2.2 bn during the period.
