Fresh violence in Manipur amid Centre's peace push
The New Indian Express Dharmapuri
|January 23, 2026
ON the day a Meitei man was abducted and shot dead in Manipur’s Churachandpur district, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs was intensifying negotiations to explore the possibility of installing a popular government in the ethnic violence-hit state, under President’s Rule since Feb 13, 2025.
The killing of Mayanglambam Rishikanta Singh (31), a Meitei who had married into the Kuki community, dealt a severe blow to ongoing peace efforts at a time when no such incident had been reported for many months. Singh, who had taken the tribal name Ginminthang after marriage, was allegedly abducted along with his wife, Chingnu Haokip, from her residence in the Tuibong area of Kuki-majority Churachandpur on Wednesday evening.
