HE Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), launched in 2019 by the Government of India, stands as one of the most ambitious and transformative water initiatives in the nation's history.

- PRIYANKA VADREVU

With a bold vision to provide safe and adequate drinking water to every rural household by 2024 through Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTCs), JJM addresses chronic issues of water scarcity, quality, and accessibility that have long plagued rural India. This initiative marks a significant step towards ensuring the health and well-being of millions across the country. As of March 2025, the mission has brought piped water to over 15.5 crore rural households, transforming lives in more than 61.83% certified villages (Jal Jeevan Mission - Har Ghar Jal). To enhance transparency and real-time tracking, the mission has deployed a robust digital monitoring ecosystem through the eJalShakti portal. This centralized dashboard provides live data on household tap connections, village certifications, water quality testing, and progress metrics across states and union territories. Through the Har Ghar Jal dashboard, stakeholders can access state-wise achievements, fund allocations, and verified coverage percentages—fostering a data-driven approach to governance and public participation.

By reducing the time and labour required to fetch water, particularly for women and children, JJM has not only improved public health outcomes but also enabled greater participation in education and economic activities. Furthermore, the creation of local jobs for the maintenance of water infrastructure is another positive outcome, contributing to the economic empowerment of rural communities. The mission has also spurred technological innovations and fostered partnerships with the private sector and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), enhancing the quality and sustainability of water supply systems. From sensor-based monitoring to the use of solar energy for pumping water, JJM has demonstrated how technology can be harnessed to solve age-old challenges in water management.
