THE first of the two-round women's chess World Cup final finished in a draw but not before Divya Deshmukh gave it a good go right from the opening. She had multiple chances but some miscalculations let her down.

After the eval bar brought it back to level pegging, both players played precise moves to ensure they go into Sunday's second round with all to play for. Classical chess finals are generally cat and mouse affairs. The opening prep is such that both players tend to cancel each other so you wait till the middlegame to see if any of the lines has the potential to get sharp.
