Housing ministry directs CPWD to ensure rainwater harvesting in all buildings

AS part of its nationwide water conservation campaign Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari (water conservation with community partnership), the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has announced that all its premises — including offices, institutions and residential colonies — across the states will have rain water harvesting system to facilitate groundwater recharge.

The ministry recently asked the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) to encourage activities to recharge groundwater. The agency issued instructions to set up the mechanism for rainwater collection and storage in buildings under its jurisdiction using 'affordable and low cost' methods, mobilising internal resources or Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds.
