House truth: Gujarat's road safety gap widens

FRESH Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha data have exposed serious problems in Gujarat's road management system.
E-challans are soaring, unpaid fines are piling up, and road fatalities remain high despite stricter enforcement. The numbers show a system in which penalties increase but compliance falls, leaving Gujarat with a widening mismatch between digital policing and real-world road safety.
The rise of e-challans is dramatic. Gujarat issued a total of 2.84 lakh challans in 2022. This jumped to 16.04 lakh in 2023 and then surged to 43.24 lakh in 2024. Fines collected increased from ₹103.35 crore in 2022 to ₹188.61 crore in 2024. But unpaid dues are growing even faster, from ₹43.88 crore in 2022 to ₹302.10 crore in 2024. Enforcement is rising, but compliance is collapsing.
