KONERU Humpy struck a decisive blow with the white pieces against Yuxin Song in the first match of their quarterfinal encounter at the women's chess World Cup in Batumi on Saturday.
Up three pawns in a rook endgame, the Indian was always in control against Song before the Chinese resigned after 50 moves. As long as Humpy, who featured in the last edition of the women's Candidates, draws with black on Sunday, she will advance to the semifinals.
