KZN’s decade of missed opportunities

A RECENT address by Statistician-General Risenga Maluleke has cast a stark, data-driven light on the profound socioeconomic challenges facing KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).

- SANJITH HANNUMAN

The figures are alarming: a 33.4% unemployment rate, a declining share of the national population and over a quarter of households dependent on social grants (Stats SA, 2022).

A critical analysis of the last decade reveals that KZN’s economic potential has been systematically undermined by political instability, poor governance, corruption and a failure to secure investor confidence.

Maluleke’s presentation underscored that KZN, despite contributing 16.1% to South Africa’s GDP, is not pulling its demographic weight. The drop in its national population share from 21.2% in 2002 to a projected 19.4% in 2025 suggests an outflow of people, likely in search of economic opportunities elsewhere.

The statistical snapshot provided by Stats SA cannot be understood without examining the tumultuous events and governance failures of the past 10 years.

The period following the death of King Goodwill Zwelithini in 2021 and that of Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi has been marked by intense political and traditional leadership disputes, creating an environment of uncertainty.
