Recent deliberations in the Kwa-Zulu-Natal legislature have revealed a troubling contrast: while gambling taxes have swelled provincial coffers to the tune of hundreds of millions of rands, this financial gain has come at a devastating price for the well-being of our most vulnerable communities. It is a classic case where short-term fiscal relief is traded for long-term social ruin, and we must demand that our authorities put people before profits.
