ANC Youth League calls for immediate withdrawal from GPU amid rising tensions

TENSIONS in the Government of Provincial Unity (GPU) are escalating, with the ANC Youth League in KwaZulu-Natal calling for the party to withdraw from the political arrangement.

The league argues that other members of the GPU are intent on sabotaging and destroying the ANC. The league contends that departments in the provincial government, as well as municipalities led by the ANC, are being targeted by other GPU members. The recent unseating of the ANC leadership through a vote of no confidence in the Umkhanyakude District Municipality appears to have been the final straw for the league.

In response to these allegations, the DA in the province has pushed back, stating that its MECs deployed to the GPU are performing their duties responsibly.

In a statement released recently, the league warned that the ANC risks being ruined if it continues to participate in the GPU. Tensions have been mounting within the GPU due to various incidents at both municipal and provincial government levels.

The ANC provincial task team previously highlighted accusations that the GPU was being weaponised against the ANC, claiming that ANC-led municipalities were being specifically targeted.

The IFP-run Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs has been accused of targeting the eThekwini Municipality and the Umkhanyakude District Municipality. The youth league echoed these sentiments in its statement.
