My Christmas in a glass - a toast to happiness past, present and future

Ah, tis the time of year when we all make merry, imbibing with mirth and merriment for the holidays ahead. My folks loved Christmas and imbued our home with a sense of wonder. There were strict adherences, such as the tree going up in the last few days before Christmas so the needles of the fir were fresh and still scented. Each day another net of oranges and clementines was added to bowls and baskets already brimming with fruit, and Mum would be found in the kitchen rolling pastry for pies or icing a cake.

OnlyFans is the billion-dollar symptom of a loneliness pandemic - real life is the cure

Loneliness is lucrative. Leonid Radvinsky, the secretive owner of OnlyFans, received a $700 million (£523m) windfall last year, while the platform's top tier of content creators — mostly women — earn millions annually. With $7.2 billion in annual gross revenue and just 46 employees, OnlyFans may be one of the most profitable companies on the planet. The site is viewed as a porn-centric hub where men pay women for sexual content, whereas the company claims it's giving creators and their 378 million fans (greater than the population of the US) something more: an opportunity to forge “authentic connections”.

Ramsay's top dog conquers Le Gavroche

Food is the great stirrer of memory. Madeleines for Proust, toad in the hole for me. It follows that restaurants are vehicles of a kind, both Concordes and DeLoreans: they take us across the world, but also through time. Pubs summoning the splendour of the Victorians; wine bars that recall Paris in the 1950s; brasseries with a touch of 1960s cool. Rarely, though, are the early-2000s exhumed, as in Bonheur. “Ah, the great mediocrity of the Noughties,” I didn’t think. “Thank God someone’s brought it back.”

Justice delayed is justice denied, which is why we're cutting back jury trials

The grim reality of the justice system means victims of serious violent or sexual crimes in London today could wait years for their day in court. London has the biggest backlog in England and Wales, with some cases in Croydon Crown Court listed as far ahead as 2029. And it is not an abstract failure. It is a human tragedy unravelling in slow motion, day after day, case after case.
