Sunday marked the second anniversary of the day when the landmark was found on its side, having been felled overnight illegally by Adam Carruthers and Daniel Graham.

In July this year, the pair were jailed for more than four years for chopping it down. Following the incident, there was an outcry of grief which was felt far beyond Northumberland, with the tree considered a symbol of the county.

But it is still attracting visitors from all around the UK. Trevor Walding was on a road trip in Northumberland from his home in Bristol.

He said: “We felt as though we had to come here, it’s a symbolic area.
