Street lights on coastal road would be 'awful'

A SOUTH Shields MP has spoken out against plans for street lights at a popular coastal viewpoint of the Northern Lights.

Emma Lewell, Labour MP for South Shields, has described the level of light pollution from the approved lampposts as 'awful' for the area.

The scheme will see 10-metre lighting columns installed on the west side of the Coast Road, at The Leas, something which the MP has said will be detrimental to those living in the area.

Emma Lewell MP said: "The National Trust and residents came to me to say that the council hasn't listened to them in this case.

"The council began work on National Trust land without consulting them and with limited interactions with residents, and now the work is taking place across the road.
