Solar plans given green light despite public outcry

PLANS for a 100-hectare solar farm in Greenside have been referred to the Government after councillors approved the proposals despite local opposition.

At a planning and development meeting at Gateshead Civic Centre on Wednesday night, councillors approved proposals for a solar farm which could power over 18,800 homes.

The scheme will need to be approved by the Government before work can begin.

According to the applicant, energy firm Exegen, the solar farm would also save around 22,5000 tons of CO2 per year.
