Mobile phones went off all over Britain on Sunday afternoon – or did they?

- JULIA BANIM reports

So why didn't I get Sunday's national alert?

WHETHER they were dozing in armchairs, walking off their Sunday dinner or even trudging through the last few miles of the Great North Run, people across the UK would have heard a loud siren-like sound emanating from their phones at 3pm on Sunday.

It was the second nationwide test of an early warning system, with nearly everyone owning a mobile phone or tablet receiving the alert.

The alert is designed to warn Britons of potential life-threatening disasters such as severe weather conditions or terrorist attacks. It’s estimated that close to 100 million phones will have received Sunday’s alerts. However, not everyone was alerted, leading to some confusion.
