Ramsdale's heroics are cherry on top of the cup cake

United found another dramatic way to triumph as they won through to the fourth round of the FA Cup with a nerve-jangling penalty shootout victory. The Magpies trailed 2-1 deep into stoppage time, but a late, late penalty kick from Anthony Gordon forced another 30 minutes of compelling action.

Harvey Barnes then thought he had won it in the final minutes of extra time as he headed home his second goal of the evening, only for Bournemouth to hit back with virtually the last kick of the game to make it 3-3 - forcing a penalty shootout.

Amid the drama, despite Nick Woltemade and Bruno Guimaraes failing to convert from the penalty spot, Aaron Ramsdale saved three penalties to secure Newcastle’s passage to the next round.

Here are five things we learned from another breathtaking win at St James’ Park.

Ramsdale came back into the side after losing his place to Nick Pope at Burnley and largely gave a good account of himself.

He made a series of big saves but hesitation between him and Sven Botman allowed Marcus Tavernier to nip in between them to send the game to penalties.

It could have cost Newcastle dearly but their second-choice goalkeeper became the hero during the penalty shootout, saving spot-kicks from Evanilson, Alex Jimenez and Bafode Diakite.
