Polls show public has reversed its support for Brexit

ALMOST all UK opinion polls since 2018 have indicated that the public has reversed its previous support for Brexit. The latest YouGov opinion poll, for instance, shows that only 31% think that leaving the EU was the right decision, and 56% think it was wrong.

- Giuseppe Bignardi

This change in public opinion vindicates those who campaigned for a second confirmatory referendum.

For the time being, though, we are stuck with Brexit and its consequences.

The Office for Budget Responsibility updated its Brexit analysis on July 30. They reckon that Brexit brought about a 4% reduction in productivity and a 15% reduction in both imports and exports. According to John Doxford (The Constitution Society, 2025), Brexit has created a £40bn tax revenue shortfall requiring tax increases.

Furthermore, recent events, like the invasion of Ukraine and the reelection of Trump, have demonstrated that European cohesion is more important than ever.

Parliament recently debated Starmer's attempt to reset our relationship with Europe and Nigel Farage was conspicuous for his absence. According to Jonty Bloom (The New World, May 21) Farage "knows Brexit has failed and he doesn't want to be associated with it any more - not when there is mileage in ranting about small boats instead".
