One man charged in the wake of city centre protest

ONE person has been charged after a protest in Newcastle city centre on Saturday, while another has been bailed and two more have been released.
Four people were arrested after hundreds of protesters and counter-protesters took to the streets on Saturday afternoon.
The protest came one year on from the far right violence which escalate into riots around the North East and the wider UK.
Individuals claiming to be “patriots” took part in an event advertised online by the “Great British National Protest” group outside of a city centre hotel, and were met with a heavy police presence.
Similar events took place in London and Manchester. The protest was sparked by ongoing fears among far right groups about the number of people housed in hotels while awaiting verdicts on their asylum applications.
Official figures show that in fact, as of March 2025, there were 32,345 asylum seekers in hotel accommodation.
That figure, from the Home Office's official data, is almost 20,000 lower than it had been two years earlier.
