New courts for racquet sports hang in balance

PLANS for a new sports facility in Gateshead have been recommended for refusal despite public support for it.

Gateshead Council's planning and development committee will meet to decide an application for a padel and pickleball facility in unit 16 on the Team Valley Trading Estate. The plans, submitted by RDG Leisure Ltd, also include a cafe for prospective users of the facility and members of the public.

Padel is a racquet sport using the same scoring as tennis but played on smaller courts. Pickleball is similar but uses paddles to hit plastic balls across a lower net.
