Mayor welcomes £30m science boost for region

THE North East is set to get at least £30m from a new Government fund that aims to boost research into science and technology.
The package will be announced in this week's spending review, with regions around the UK handed significant allocations to spend on local priorities, the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology said.
The overall package, which has been welcomed by North East mayor Kim McGuinness, will be announced as Chancellor Rachel Reeves sets out departmental spending plans on Wednesday. It is expected to be worth more than £22.5bn-a-year by the end of the decade.
It is hoped that the funding will help regional mayors develop 'innovation clusters' that can drive economic growth.
In the North East that work is expected to be concentrated on existing strengths in the automotive and advanced manufacturing sectors, but also in emerging areas such as Al and space.
