IT doesn’t pay to read too much into a single by-election, but the result from South Jesmond on Thursday only confirms trends seen across the country - Labour is in trouble.

It wasn’t so much that Labour - already running a minority administration on Newcastle City Council - saw their stock of seats further diminished; it was the manner of it. In a once-safe seat they were a distant third.
