Keeping 'walkies' out in nature clean for all
The Journal
|April 17, 2025
BRITAIN is a nation of dog lovers and when the weather is as wonderful as it has been so far this April, that becomes abundantly clear.
Beaches are full of the sound of barking, whilst the countryside is packed with pooches enjoying long walks in the sunshine. However it leaves a bitter taste when you step in dog poo on a countryside walk, or spot a dog off its lead chasing birds or sheep.
One Northumberland attraction has come up with a novel idea to make sure that dog owners are acting responsibly. Housesteads Roman Fort brought the first dog rangers on board last summer, and both have returned for 2025.
I took a walk with Charlie Wainwright and six-year-old Mioritic Shepherd Bear, and Tom Millmore and five-year-old Golden retriever Mr Darcy to find out more about their work.
Both pooches are big softies, delighted to get plenty of attention in the cafe (Bear had his paw on my knee several times as I interviewed his owner). They have the ideal temperaments for a busy site frequented by families with kids and other dogs.
