'Historic day for Seaham' with launch of services to London

A "historic day" for Seaham has been hailed as the first ever direct rail services to London launched from the coastal County Durham town.

Local leaders believe that this will not only boost connectivity, but also increase investment and tourism.
As part of the new UK-wide train timetable which came into effect on Sunday, there will be four daily Grand Central services between Seaham and the capital.
The introduction of Seaham as a stop came after "extensive lobbying" from Labour MP Grahame Morris and open-access operator Grand Central.
The direct link will cut out the need for Seaham passengers to change at Sunderland, Durham or Newcastle and is expected to cut between 30 and 45 minutes off journeys on average.
