THIS corner of Newcastle city centre has long since been demolished but it was the location for a well-known scene from British movie history.

Those familiar with the classic 1971 film Get Carter will know how gangster Jack Carter, played by actor Michael Caine, gets off his train from London at Newcastle Central Station and heads straight to a nearby pub where he famously orders “a pint of bitter ... in a thin glass”.

The exterior of that pub can be seen in our main photograph, which shows an imposing now-vanished Victorian-built block that dominated the corner of Neville Street and Grainger Street. It’s a view Geordies of a certain vintage will remember.
