In our increasingly dizzying world, I have come to the conclusion that we have to start calling out the truly awful people whose politics we might share.

Politics is a pursuit that is every bit as tribal as football. You support your team and hope that the others lose. But if we can’t call out the really bad people, even when they’re on our own side, we are in real trouble.

Take ~ as I fear we must ~ Robert Jenrick. It’s easy to make fun of the morals-averse MP for Newark (and don’t worry, we will come to that later.) But I can tell you that, when I was reporting from the Conservative Party conference last year, the only person who drew any sort of queue from the Tory faithful was Mr Jenrick.
