ECKY Willis had become fed up with punishing paperwork and the behaviour of pupils while teaching at primary schools across the North East.
> Becky Willis swapped teaching for a degree apprenticeship
It was then that the 31-year-old decided to embark on a new career and joined Gateshead-based firm Tyneside Home Improvements (THI). Since then, Becky has gone from strength to strength and is thriving in the male-dominated industry, where she is involved in all aspects of the business.
Amid her work helping to improve mental health and mentoring younger employees, she was this summer nominated for Degree Apprentice of the Year at the North East Apprenticeship Awards. Becky said: “My decision to join THI has completely transformed my life, and I haven't looked back.
“I was passionate about teaching, and I did love it, but it had got to the point where I had no work, life balance. I was working six days a week, sometimes more. I only really had Saturday off, and even then, I couldn't switch off.
“Before teaching in the UK, I spent five years working at international schools in the Middle East. Returning home was a huge culture shock. I found the kids weren’t as interested in learning, and I was working much harder, for less money. I was also doing supply teaching, and I didn’t like the instability.
“Many of my skills have been transferable, as I have spent time working closely with young apprentices. It’s rewarding to witness their growth and development.
