FROM a small settlement of ‘shiels’to a thriving town, North Shields has a fascinating history.

Founded in 1225 when a group of huts called shiels were constructed on land beside the River Tyne, the North Tyneside town has grown and gone from strength to strength.

Anew exhibition ‘North Shields, 800 years in the making’ takes visitors on a journey from the town's humble beginnings at the mouth of the Pow Burn where the fish quay is today, through wars, innovation through to growth and development.
