Derby cup tie will be no dead rubber
The Journal
|November 21, 2025
AFTER the fallout of the Tyne-Wear derby, there is a lot less riding on this weekend's fixtures. Or is there?
Attention turns to the League Cup and the final matches in the group stage. None of our teams can progress to the quarterfinals, but that doesn’t mean the games will not be taken seriously.
When is a dead rubber not a dead rubber? No, not a joke but a question with a serious answer - when it’s a derby.
Sunderland may have been on the wrong end of the final scoreline at St James’ Park last Sunday, but they have a chance to get bragging rights over another local rival when they welcome Durham for the second time this season.
The hosts haven’t won a match since the teams last met in mid-September and have seen themselves drop to 10th place in the league after a promising start.
Having lost the derby last weekend, some confidence-building is needed; it would have hurt, particularly after it looked as if they were getting back into it at 1-0 down and being given a penalty.
