United’s transfer business this month is all going to hinge on whether they make a move to sign a new defender. The Magpies are in the midst of an injury crisis with fullback Tino Livramento expected to be out for between six to eight weeks and centre-back Fabian Schar expected to miss three months with an ankle injury.

With Dan Burn, Emil Krafth and Jamaal Lascelles all out of action, it has left them with just four fit recognised senior defenders in the squad.

As such, they are expected to be monitoring potential new signings at the back this month, with Eddie Howe admitting that was an option on Tuesday and, with that in mind, we've rounded up all of the latest transfer talk.

Newcastle want to sign a right-sided centre-half this transfer window. That's the word coming out of St James' Park in the last 48 hours as they react to Schar's injury news.

However, there remains the understanding that United will only sign a player this month who fits in with their long-term strategy.
