Declining high streets 'a source of deep shame'

Front Street in Chester-le-Street, County Durham

Luke Akehurst, MP for North Durham, said the state of Chester-le-Street and Stanley town centres has created a "depressing air of dereliction" due to the amount of empty shops, causing a "source of deep shame and disappointment to residents".

The Labour member presented 10-minute Rule Bill in Parliament which would compel landlords to make empty shop units available for temporary accommodation by charities, community groups, and small businesses. 10-minute Rule Bills are a parliamentary procedure which give MPs the opportunity to raise certain issues. The bill was cosponsored by MPs in Stoke, Cornwall and Kent.

"Everywhere I go in North Durham, this is a matter of great concern for residents," Mr Akehurst told the House of Commons debate.
