This is all too brutal

The Island

|

August 28, 2025

We humans need some relief from this unforgiving grim reality. We have moved too far away from nature and its natural beauty. Unknown and unrecognised by us, we humans are suffering, unnecessarily so, it feels.

Our natural spirits of warmth and generosity are pinched, frozen and scarcely used. The spirit of Mr Scrooge has taken precedence over the kind, friendly Mr Pickwick. We need more of what is beautiful in our lives. There are many beautiful sounds and sights around, but they are not given prominence. In business terms, marketing all that is wholesome and beautiful is not a viable proposition in this day and age.

The creation and communication of beauty is neglected. Beautiful gardens are from an age gone by. Keats, Shelly and Byron are long forgotten. Grey’s Elegy is unknown. Wordsworth’s Daffodils hardly survives in GCE A/L exams. Literature is for dissection and academic examination, not for enjoyment as the poet had intended.
