Peanuts
-
Peanuts, often mistaken for true nuts, are actually legumes that pack a powerful nutritional punch.
Whether consumed as roasted snacks, in peanut butter, or incorporated into various dishes, peanuts are a favourite across the globe. But while they offer numerous health benefits, they are not without potential drawbacks. Let’s take a closer look at the pros and cons of this humble but mighty legume.
Peanuts are loaded with essential nutrients. A 100-gram serving offers about 25 grams of protein, making them a rich source of plant-based protein, especially valuable for vegetarians and vegans. They are also high in healthy fats, predominantly monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, which contribute to cardiovascular health.
Rich in vitamins and minerals, peanuts provide niacin, folate, magnesium, vitamin E, and manganese. Niacin supports brain function and may reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, while folate is crucial for DNA synthesis and cell repair. Magnesium plays a vital role in muscle and nerve function, and vitamin E acts as an antioxidant, protecting cells from damage.
