While mouthwash is often seen as a quick fix for bad breath, its advantages go far beyond simply freshing the breath. With regular use, mouthwash can help prevent various dental issues and promote overall oral hygiene.

There are several types of mouthwash, each formulated for specific purposes. Generally, mouthwashes fall into two categories: cosmetic and therapeutic. Cosmetic mouthwashes are primarily designed to mask bad breath and leave a refreshing taste in the mouth. They often contain ingredients like menthol or eucalyptus oil, which give a cooling effect and a pleasant scent but do little to address underlying oral health issues.

On the other hand, therapeutic mouthwashes contain active ingredients that target specific oral problems. These might include fluoride to help prevent cavities, antiseptic agents like chlorhexidine to fight bacteria, or astringents such as zinc compounds to reduce plaque buildup. Many therapeutic mouthwashes also target gum health, preventing gingivitis or inflammation in the gums.
