Microplastics and health
The Island
|April 03, 2025
In recent years, microplastics have emerged as a significant environmental concern, but they pose a much greater risk than simply polluting our oceans and landscapes.
-
The alarming truth is that microplastics—tiny plastic particles less than 5 millimeters in size—are making their way into our bodies. But how exactly do these microscopic particles enter our systems, and what are the potential health implications?
Microplastics can enter the human body through various channels, often without us even realising it. The primary routes of exposure include ingestion, inhalation, and dermal contact.
One of the most common ways microplastics enter our bodies is through the food we consume. Studies have shown that microplastics are present in a wide range of foods, from seafood to salt, bottled water to honey, and even in fruits and vegetables. Plastic particles can find their way into the food supply chain in various ways—via pollution in the environment, the breakdown of larger plastic items, or even through packaging.
