How to avoid falls
The Island
|October 28, 2025
Falls are one of the most common threats to the health and independence of older adults. They can turn an ordinary day into a frightening experience with painful consequences that go far beyond bruises. A fall can lead to broken bones, a long hospital stay and the loss of confidence needed to move about freely. The good news is that many falls are not a part of normal ageing and simple measures can greatly reduce the risk.

Strength and balance tend to decline as years pass. Muscles become weaker if they are not used regularly. A gentle routine of physical activity can build strength and improve stability. Walking, stretching and light exercises that train balance can help older people stay steady on their feet.
Activities like tai chi or simple chair exercises that focus on posture and coordination are beneficial. The aim is not athletic performance but maintaining the ability to move with ease and confidence. It is always wise to begin slowly and choose movements that feel comfortable.
Vision also plays a major part in preventing falls. Eyesight can change gradually and older adults may not notice how much they strain to see steps, rugs or small objects. Regular eye checks ensure that glasses are up to date. Better vision helps a person judge distance more accurately and reduces the chance of tripping.
Sunglasses can help reduce glare outdoors while good lighting inside the home prevents shadows from hiding hazards.
