Economic connectivity in South Asia, a must for collective wellbeing

It will accrue to the collective economic benefit of the South Asian region that Afghanistan and Pakistan have decided to give peace a chance in their often strained ties.

The countries have reportedly agreed to a ceasefire in their latest round of border skirmishes and opted for “lasting peace and stability” between them and this is the way to go from the viewpoint of the impoverished region.

The Afghan-Pakistan fence-mending comes a few months after India and Pakistan decided against prolonging very dangerously escalating armed clashes between them and those wishing South Asia well could take heart from the current cessation of overt tensions between these key countries of the region.

From now on one hopes that the strengthening of inter-country economic connectivity would take priority in the relations among these states who are yet to work concertedly towards this end.

This columnist is not in agreement with those cynics who have pronounced SAARC 'dead' but is of the standpoint that although the grouping is in a state of paralysis right now it could be revived and rendered operational provided member countries of SAARC energetically work towards its total rejuvenation. Despite some lingering differences between India and some its neighbours this aim could be achieved but it seems to be the lack of foresight and vision among those helming the 'SAARC Eight' which is stalling all possibilities of revival.

No doubt this is easier said than done but if it is seen that it is 'economics that is driving politics', concerted revival action among the 'SAARC Eight' could be facilitated. Much depends on farseeing thought and action by India which could help build some trust among the 'Eight' and lay the basis for a normalization of ties among its feuding members.
