Hamas says it has accepted a new proposal from Arab mediators for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip as Israel indicated its positions haven’t changed, while Gaza’s Health Ministry said the Palestinian death toll from 22 months of war has passed 62,000.

Hamas accepts new Arab ceasefire proposal on Gaza

President Donald Trump appeared to cast doubt on the long-running negotiations that Washington has mediated as well. “We will only see the return of the remaining hostages when Hamas is confronted and destroyed!!! The sooner this takes place, the better the chances of success will be," he posted on social media.

Israel announced plans to reoccupy Gaza City and other heavily populated areas after ceasefire talks appeared to break down last month, raising the possibility of a worsening humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, which experts say is sliding into famine.

Plans to expand the offensive, in part aimed at pressuring Hamas, have sparked international outrage and infuriated many Israelis who fear for the remaining hostages taken in the 7 October 2023. Hundreds of thousands took part in mass protests on Sunday calling for their return.

Cooper's asylum measures are simply too little, too late

On the government's first day back in the Commons - after a summer marked by dire headlines about asylum hotels and an ever-rising number of arrivals in small boats - Yvette Cooper was probably hoping that her plans to fix “our broken asylum system” would draw a line under things. Fat chance, home secretary.

How do the numbers stack up on small boat arrivals?

Small boat arrivals across the Channel were lower last month than in any August since 2019. On the face of it, this looks like some rare good news for the home secretary, at a time when the use of hotels to house asylum seekers has become a major national issue. But how good is the news really?

What’s with the incessant security checks in Turkey?

Q Can you help me with something? I am currently at the departure gate at Bodrum airport in Turkey, waiting for a delayed flight. We have already been searched twice, and now, if I want to leave to go to the toilet, I have to be searched on reentry. From the limited enquiries I have been able to make, the airport seems to blame the airline, which in turn says the UK government requires it. Can you shed any light on this disagreeable state of affairs?
