'UK defences facing similar situation to end of 1930s'
The Herald
|March 13, 2026
THE UK is facing a "similar situation" as it did in the lead-up to the Second World War, with defences run down, the Commons Leader has said.
-
Sir Alan Campbell insisted the Government was working to rebuild the country's defences, which was compared to the 1930s, but told MPs he hopes what "happened later is not something that happens now".
The Commons Leader was responding to Tory former defence minister Andrew Murrison, who called for the Government to release the long-awaited defence investment plan, which it was due to be published last autumn.
The comments come amid the unfolding conflict between the US and Iran, which has placed a strain on the special relationship between the UK and Washington.
