PLANS for a “new town” of 10,000 homes in Plymouth city centre could “bring the area to life’ it has been claimed.

- By WILLIAM TELFORD

The Plympton and Plymouth City Centre Company said the announcement that Plymouth will be one of 12 areas chosen by the Government for large-scale home building would provide a “huge boost” for businesses and jobs.

It said sticking thousands of homes in the city centre would create “bustling neighbourhoods’ with shops and schools too. In a newsletter to businesses, PCCC said: “This is the good news we have been waiting for following the £30m investment in the transformation in Armada Way.

“Tt will provide the regeneration the city centre needs, safeguard and create jobs, and provide more customers for existing and new businesses and reduce the number of vacant units. It will bring the city centre to life by day and night”

Plymouth City Council has already drawn up a “vision” for the city centre, which envisages 10,000 new homes. Minutes of secret meetings held between Government quango Homes England and the council, seen by The Herald, revealed architects were looking at a plan for 30 tower blocks in the city centre.
