Surrealism is still an inspiration to artists

YOU can see this oil painting in Surreal Estates on the first floor of The Box, in a display case that features works by Surrealist artists who had connections with the South West.

Surreal Estates showcases the winners and entries to our 2025 children and young people's art competition which was inspired by the major Forbidden Territories: 100 Years of Surreal Landscapes exhibition which is also currently on show.

This work is titled Fool Carrying a Child. It dates from 1963 and is by a Plymouth-born artist called Cecil Collins (1908-1989).

It's one of 11 works - eight prints, one drawing and two watercolours - that were bequeathed to Plymouth by his wife in 2001, through the National Art Collections Fund. We also have four other works by him in the art collection, which were all acquired in the late 1980s/early 1990s.
