WETHERSPOON magnate Sir Tim Martin has seen his tax bill rise by nearly £20m - with each pub paying more than £1m.

Mr Martin's £199.7m tax liability, up from £170m last year, puts him at number eight in the list of the 100 top taxpayers.

The 70-year-old, who lives in Exeter, pays even more than other Westcountry bosses, such as Specsavers’ founders Dame Mary and Douglas Perkins, tech mogul Sir James Dyson, and Plymouth's retail tycoon Chris Dawson.

But he is behind Bristol's Peter Hargreaves, at number six, whose tax liability is £210.

Mr Hargreaves sold a stake in the financial services business he co-founded, Hargreaves Lansdown, for £550m making him liable for a charge of at least 14%.
