Joining Argyle was an easy choice admits Mathias Ross

MATHIAS Ross believes there is much more to come from him performance-wise after making his debut for Plymouth Argyle in the 2-0 Vertu Trophy win against Cheltenham Town at Home Park on Tuesday night.

The Danish defender had not started a game since last November, when he played for Sparta Prague in the Czech Republic on loan from top Turkish side Galatasaray. He then made only two substitute appearances from the start of December onwards.

Ross reached a mutual agreement to cancel his contract at Galatasaray in early July and was without a club until he joined Argyle on a three-year deal last month. After spending the last two seasons out on loan, the first one at NEC Nijmegen in the Netherlands and the second at Sparta Prague, he is enjoying the new sense of stability about his career with the Pilgrims.

The 24-year-old played as the right-sided centre-back - his preferred position - for just over an hour against Cheltenham before he was substituted, as he continues to build up his fitness levels after quite a lengthy time away from football.

Ross said: "I think it went good. I was a bit excited before the game to see where I'm standing physically because the last time I was starting a game was in November so it's a very long time ago. I was a bit curious to see where I was at physically and also playing-wise, but I was feeling quite well out there through the game."
