Is overseeing the police a full-time job?
The Herald
|November 19, 2025
LET'S be clear about something: The scrapping of Police and Crime Commissioners across England and Wales has absolutely nothing to do with the performance of Alison Hernandez, who is the current (and seemingly last) PCC for Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
Although some have justified the scrapping of the PCC system by calling into question Ms Hernandez’s decision-making, there are many others who feel she has done a good job, and that the issues which have beset the police and its leadership, have not been of her own making.
Of course, having to pay three Chief Constables at the same time due to investigations into the conduct of two if them is not ideal, but often it is those at the top of an organisation who pay the price if questions are asked of those down the pecking order.
Yet the achievements or otherwise of Ms Hernandez has had no bearing on Labour's decision to scrap the position across the country, and much more to do with their planned reorganisation of local governance.
For the record, I think it's worth pointing to many of the positive things which have come from Ms Hernandez’s rein - and which saw her reelected to the role.
