Help - my council tax support has stopped
The Herald
|April 09, 2025
I just moved from my old benefits to Universal Credit, and I've suddenly got a letter from the council saying my Council Tax Support has been stopped. I'm worried I won't be able to keep up with payments without it - why has this happened and is there anything I can do?
-
WE'RE sorry you're feeling worried and we're here to help. Over the last year, we've advised 1,468 residents on different Universal Credit (UC) issues, including the move from old benefits to UC. Besides Council Tax Support, there are other differences you need to be aware of when you switch, so this is a good question. Here's why your support has stopped, what you need to do next and what else to look out for.
Although you'll be asked if you have any Council Tax discounts when you apply for UC, UC doesn't include financial help with Council Tax. This is because the council manage Council Tax Support, whereas UC is administered by the Department for Work & Pensions (DWP).
