UK military to get new power to shoot down unidentified drones
The Guardian
|October 21, 2025
Soldiers are to be given new powers to shoot down unidentified drones believed to be threatening UK military bases in response to a recent spate of incursions in Europe.
John Healey, the defence secretary, announced the measure at a speech in the City of London yesterday, in which he also warned of increased Russian drone attacks in Ukraine and eastern Europe.
At present, the military can neutralise drones electronically through signal or GPS jamming, but the plan is to give extra powers to use force, potentially at civilian airports.
