Trump Will Lift Tariffs on Parts to Ease US Car Industry Fears

Donald Trump was set to water down his tariffs yesterday by lifting some duties on foreign automotive parts after he was warned his strategy would increase costs for US car manufacturers by billions of dollars.
The US treasury secretary, Scott Bessent, said Trump was "committed to bringing back auto production to the US, so we want to give automakers a path to do that quickly, efficiently and create as many jobs as possible".
The move comes after industry analysis found the big three US carmakers - Ford, General Motors and Stellantis - could face an increase of more than $42bn (£31bn) in costs as a result of Trump's 25% tariff on imported parts, with duties of almost $5,000 on the parts used in the average car assembled in the US.
